I FINALLY GOT MY GIRL!!!

As a mom to two very active boys, I often wondered what it would be like to have a girl. Well, now I finally have my little girl; of course, she is of the four-legged variety.

Meet Zoey, the newest addition to my very active family. We found and fell in love with Zoey at the local animal shelter. Or should I say, my soon to be 6 year old son fell in love with her. Zoey is a much awaited birthday gift to our son. He has been asking for a beagle puppy since he was 2 and after years of begging his daddy, daddy has finally complied.

Zoey is actually a beagle and terrier mix. She has the markings of a beagle but has the face and size of a Jack Russell terrier. She is very active and will definitely keep this house hopping. She's already confiscated my slippers and my shoes and has gotten into the garbage can. Yuck!!! Now I just need to make sure she stays away from my beads!

Last month I was asked by Artbeads to review one of their new products and although it has been a long time coming, I have finally created a necklace featuring this incredible art pendant. This spectacular wood framed pendant features a print of the "Island Rights" painting by California artist Peter Pierce. Although this pendant would look great simply hung from a leather cord or ribbon, I chose to pair it with coordinating green seed beads and fuchsia chalcedony rounds accented with fancy sterling silver bead caps.

I am a big fan of the beach having grown up on the California coast and this print is an incredible representation of the natural beauty of a tropical paradise. It actually reminds me of my honeymoon in the Bahamas. The colors are rich and vibrant and this mini-masterpiece would be a perfect accessory for any beach lover.

The painting is printed on real canvas with pigment paint and then coated with two layers of water-resistant varnish. The only negative remark I have regarding the pendant is that the bail is silver-plated and I usually only work with precious metals but other than that this piece is truely an incredible work of art. HEALTH UPDATE

Update on my son's cardiologist appointment - It appears he is a healthy 7 year old boy. Thank goodness. The highlight of the appointment for him was to see his heart via ultrasound. This child was so intrigued. I practically had to drag him out of the office, all he wanted to do was discuss his heart with the doctor. Hopefully, this will be the end of the continuing round robin of doctor's visits.

KIDS = GREY HAIR

Well we survived the allergy screening last week and yes, my eldest son does suffer from allergies. Considering both my husband and I are chronic allergy sufferers, I guess it was inevitable both my kids would follow suit. Fortunately, he is only allergic to most grasses and some trees so Springtime is the worst time of year for him. Fortunately, he doesn't have to have shots at this time. Thank goodness because he screamed bloody murder during the scratch test. He is such a drama king!

I thought this would end the continuous round robin of doctor visits but unfortunately, his allergist detected a heart murmur and recommended that he be seen by his pediatrician. So yesterday off we went to have his heart checked. As a result, we now have an appointment with a pediatric cardiologist tomorrow. It is probably nothing but they want to be certain. Needless to say, I think I have at least twenty new grey hairs that have now infiltrated my already peppered head. Thank goodness for hair color!

I'll update again tomorrow following the cardiology appointment and as promised, I will post the product review by this weekend.

MARCH MADNESS

I can't believe it has been more than three weeks since I last posted. Life has been quite a challange this entire month. Spring is in the air and with Spring comes allergy season. Need I say more.

February began with both my boys getting sick, followed by my husband and I. My oldest son, the healthiest of the two, recovered quickly but my youngest had a cough for more than four weeks and by the beginning of March, his asthma was getting worse. Even his inhalers weren't being effective. So off to the doctor we went.

I thought we'd get a new steroidal inhaler for him and he'd be on the road to recovery. Not!!! We were sent home with a nebulizer which we were to use three times a day, Prednisone (a very nasty drug which can make one very moody), and an antibiotic (to fight any bug that may be present in his lungs). Well after two weeks of treatments, I am happy to say, my five year old has recovered - just in time for soccer season. Now we are back to weekly allergy injections again to hopefully ward off any future problems.

Now here I was thinking we were all going to remain healthy. Surprise, my eldest started showing signs of allergies about two weeks ago. What!!! He is my healthy child. It started with his eyes burning and swelling following soccer practice one night and has progressed to sneezing, a runny nose and a nasty cough. It seems he is worse in the evening, following soccer practice. So I finally made the decision to have him screened for allergies. So off we go tomorrow, back to the doctor for the allergy scratch test. Oh, please give me strength....Hopefully, he won't have to have allergy injections. I think two of us getting shots for allergies (my youngest and myself) are enough but what the heck, why not make it a family affair.

Anyhow, I was fortunate to be picked to evaluate a new and exciting product from Artbeads and I was hoping to incorporate it into one of my designs but given the craziness currently in my home, I was unable to create something. So within this next week, I will be evaluating the product on its own. So make sure and check back.

MARCH - DVT AWARENESS MONTH

Almost seven years ago, my mother passed away due to a Pulmonary Embolism, a complication associated with Deep-Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common but serious medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in one of the large veins, usually in the lower limbs. A complication of DVT, pulmonary embolism (PE), can occur when afragment of a blood clot breaks loose from the wall of the vein and migrates to the lungs, where it blocks a pulmonary artery or one of its branches.

Blockage of the main pulmonary artery by one or more of the emboli may be life threatening. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, a feeling of apprehension, rapid pulse, sweating, and/or a sharp chest pain that worsens with deep breathing. Some patients may cough bloody sputum, while others may develop very low blood pressure and pass out.

Up to two million Americans suffer from DVT each year, approximately 300,000 deaths annually result from PE, the majority of which result from DVT - more than breast cancer and AIDS combined.

The State of the Economy and Sales Cont.

Well, I am back to discuss the state of the economy and how it has effected my sales. For the past three years, I have primarly sold my jewelry exclusively on Rubylane and up until about 6 months ago, I have seen a steady increase in sales. However, with the downturn of the economy, sales have definitely slowed down quite a bit and for the past two months, sales have reached on all time low. In fact, sales for last month were half what they were at this time last year - which is normally a slow month anyhow. In fact, my predominant source of sales for the past two months has been from repeat customers and custom orders. Thank goodness for my faithful followers.

However, with the high cost of maintaining my shop on Rubylane, coupled with the slowdown in sales, I have had to search for more cost effective ways to sell my jewelry which has led me to an internet-wide search for the appropriate venue to showcase my designs. Since I have relatively good exposure on Rubylane, I have no intention of closing my shop there. However, I will be downsizing my selection. This way, my fees will decrease by about 40% per month.

I have also opened a shop on 1000markets.com. This site features high quality handmade items and has a very attractive layout. Vendors are juried before they can open a shop on the site and unlike most web venues, 1000markets has established an agreement with Amazon Payments for customer purchases. A huge plus for me as a vendor is that there are no upfront fees to maintain a shop on the site. 1000markets gets paid when an item sells so the financial burden is lifted when times are tough.

As a designer, it is very hard not to get disappointed and feel like a failure when ones designs aren't flying out the door. It's difficult to find the motivation to create when times are tough. But I realize that things will eventually get better so I am using the time to promote my new shop and to develop creatively as an artist. The State of the Economy and Sales

Well, here we are, with an unemployment rate the highest it has been in over thirty years and people getting laid off from their jobs in record numbers. Many of us both personally and professionally have begun to feel the pinch.

On a personal level, my husband, the only real bread winner in the house has recently had to take a 10% pay cut, his employer terminated their 401K match and the company as a whole has downsized to a smaller building. Nothing too catastrophic given the masses who no longer are employed, but each day we wait for the shoe to drop. Fortunately, the company CEO happens to be a close friend and has told my DH that he should start sending out his resume. But given the state of the economy, what are the chances of him finding another job? We have several friends and neighbors who have been unemployed and searching for work for almost a year, so the prospects don't look too good.

Every day when my husband leaves for work in the morning, I fear that it will be his last day of employment. But we muddle along cutting back where we can and counting our blessings that he is still working and that we have a roof over our heads.

Laster in the week, I will write more about how the economy has affected me on a professional level. Until then, take care.

GOING STIR CRAZY

I have just spent the last three days cooped up in my house with a sick child. It appears my 6 year old has a really nasty flu which started on Sunday and is still going strong now on Wednesday. Until today, he's been fighting a fever and has a really bad cough and runny nose. Poor guy has barely eaten in days and has already lost about 2 lbs, weight he can ill afford to lose. Right now he is only 46 lbs and is nothing but bones at 4'2" tall. Hopefully, we are on the tail end of this awful bug, at least for him. Unfortunately, it appears his younger brother, is coming down with the same bug so I guess I will be spending another few days cooped up on the house.

So what better thing to do than create. Here are a couple new creations I've been working on.

PUBLIC RESTROOMS - A Must Read for All Women

A read this recently and got a kick out of it. Thought I'd share...

When you have to visit a public bathroom, you usually find a line of women, so you smile politely and take your place. Once it's your turn, you check for feet under the stall doors. Every stall is occupied.

Finally, a door opens and you dash in, nearly knocking down the woman leaving the stall.

You get in to find the door won't latch. It doesn't matter, the wait h as been so long you are about to wet your pants! The dispenser for the modern "seat covers" (invented by someone's Mom, no doubt) is handy, but empty. You would hang your purse on the door hook, if there was one, but there isn't - so you carefully, but quickly drape it around your neck, (Mom would turn over in her grave if you put it on the FLOOR!), yank down your pants, and assume " The Stance."

In this position your aging, toneless thigh muscles begin to shake. You'd love to sit down, but you certainly hadn't taken time to wipe the seat or lay toilet paper on it, so you hold "The Stance".

To take your mind off your trembling thighs, you reach for what yo u discover to be the empty toilet paper dispenser. In your mind, you can hear your mother's voice saying, "Honey, if you had tried to clean the seat, you would have KNOWN there was no toilet paper!" Your thighs shake more.

You remember the tiny tissue that you blew your nose on yesterday - the one that's still in your purse. (Oh yeah, the purse around your neck, that now, you have to hold up trying not to strangle yourself at the same time). That would have to do. You crumple it in the puffiest way possible. It's still smaller than your thumbnail .

Someone pushes your door open because the latch doesn't work. The door hits your purse, which is hanging around you r neck in front of your chest, and you and your purse topple backward against the tank of the toilet. "Occupied!" you scream, as you reach for the door, dropping your precious, tiny, crumpled ;tissue in a puddle on the floor, lose your footing altogether, and slide down directly onto the TOILET SEAT.
It is wet of course. You bolt up, knowing all too well that it's too late. Your bare bottom has made contact with every imaginable germ and life form on the uncovered seat because YOU never laid down toilet paper - not that there was any, even if you had taken time to try. You know that your mother would be utterly appalled if she knew, because, you're certain her bare bottom never t ouched a public toilet seat because, frankly, dear, "You just don't KNOW what kind of diseases you could get."

By this time, the automatic sensor on the back of the toilet is so confused that it flushes, propelling a stream of water like a fire hose against the inside of the bowl that sprays a fine mist of water that covers your butt and runs down your legs and into your shoes. The flush somehow sucks everything down with such force that you grab onto the empty toilet paper dispenser for fear of being dragged in too.

At this point, you give up. You're soaked by the spewing water and the wet toilet seat. You're exhausted. You try to wipe with a gum wrapper you found in your pocket and then slink out inconspicuously to the sinks.

You can't figure out how to operate the faucets with the automatic sensors, so you wipe your hands with spit and a dry paper towel and walk past the line of women st ill waiting.

You are no longer able to smile politely to them. A kind soul at the very end of the line points out a piece of toilet paper trailing from your shoe. (Where was that when you NEEDED it??) You yank the paper from your shoe, plunk it in the woman's hand and tell her warmly, "Here, you just might need this."

As you exit, you spot your hubby, who has long since entered, used, and left the men's restroom. Annoyed, he asks, "What took you so long, and why is your purse hanging around your neck?"

This finally explains to the men what really does take us so long. It also answers their other commonly asked questions about why women go to the restroom in pairs. It's so the other gal can hold the door, hang onto your purse and hand you Kleenex under the door!

It's Been So Long...

I can't believe it has been almost three months since my last entry. Funny how life just takes you for a ride and before you know it, so much time has past.

So many things going on but I will just hit on the most important details.

I planned on posting this earlier in the week but got so busy catching up. Last weekend I had the priviledge of taking part in the Hooked on Wire Retreat here in the bay area. We got to learn lots of great wire techniques from Lisa Niven Kelly, Barb Switzer and Dallas Lovett, all really incredible artists. Each of the artists had us create really intricate wire working projects. Unfortunately, there wasn't time to finish all of the projects so I am hoping this week I will have the chance to finish them so that I can post them here. However, I was able to finish the project with Dallas Lovett - I swear I thought I was going to go blind working with all those seed beads. Here is the incredible pendant we created, called Phoenix Rising:

Wow, it seems like forever since I posted in my blog. Been quite busy last week with the show I did and then this weekend with my son's 6th birthday party. And this coming weekend, I will be taking part in the "Hooked on Wire" retreat here in California. I am so looking forward to getting some me time away from my kids and doing what I love to do, working with wire and making jewelry. It should be a lot of fun.

My son's party was loads of fun and the kids had a blast.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Just been so busy with my kids. Between swim lessons, soccer practice, and getting my oldest ready to start first grade, I am literally going crazy. Fortunately, I have found time to create new jewelry and will be continuing to add new pieces to my Rubylane shop all week. I also will be adding moving more clearance priced jewelry from Rubylane to my ETSY shop, so make sure and keeping checking back.

We will be taking a much needed vacation on Saturday and won't be back until Wednesday of next week. Looking forward to relaxing at the lake and camping with my boys. Hopefully, I'll have great picks to share when I get back.

Five years ago today, my mom passed away from complications following lung surgery. A surgery as it turned out that was unneccessary and ultimately led to her death. Unfortuantely, my mom suffered from a condition called DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), a life threatening condition that affects up to 2 million Americans each year.

DVT oocurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the lower limbs. A complication of DVT, pulmonary embolism, can occur when a fragment of a blood clot breaks loose from the wall of the vein and migrates to the lungs, where it blocks a pulmonary artery or one of its branches.

Five years ago, my mom went to the doctor complaining of pain in her chest and back so an xray was taken. The physician found a spot on her lung and since she was a smoker, suggested she have a lung biopsy to verify whether it was lung cancer. As it turned out, she did not suffer from lung cancer but had suffered from a pulmonary embolism which had cut off blood supply to a portion of her lung appearing on the xray as a spot. Unfortunately, the pulmonary embolism wasn't discovered until she'd had the surgery, a sugery that put her at risk for a second pulmonary embolism which occurred four days later and subsequently, led to her death. So every year on the anniversary of her death, I do my part to educate the public about this life threatening silent killer.

Of those Americans who suffer from pulmonary embolism as a result of DVT, 200,000 will die annually. More people die from pulmonary embolism than breast cancer and aides combined. Many may remember the reporter in Iraq who died suddenly in 2002 after being cooped up on a tank during the war. He suffered from DVT and died as a result of Pulmonary Embolism. Fortunately, as a result of his death and the death of many others, a coalition was formed to educate both the public and the medical profession about this disease. In honor of my mother who collected Delft dishes, I have created the following bracelet and earring set. The gorgeous beads in this set (created by Gina DeStevens) remind me of the blue and white dishes she had displayed on a plate rack around our dining room when I was growing up.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. We spent a very hot Saturday at the county fair and had a great time. My youngest couldn't get enough of the livestock. He wanted to pet every cow, goat, pig, sheep, rabbit and any other animal he could get his hands on. My oldest was less than impressed with the animals but loved the rides and the shows. Got a great pic of the kids with a sea otter, the highlight of the day.
